This play exemplifies why we are only 1-8. The following are major problems:
1. We had already run the exact same (or very very similar) play earlier in the game in the same situation.
2. We didn't check out of the play once it was obvious that Navy had stacked the box. Either Weis didn't call the play with a check or Sharpley failed to make the check. Calling a play along with the appropriate check is highschool level ball. Inexcusable that any college would make this mistake, let alone ND.
3. We line up in double-tight, with TE Mike Ragone (#83, top of screen in the video) lined up a yard off the line. We motion him to the left side before the snap, probably trying to pull one of Navy's LB's over to that side. They don't bite (only a corner follows him) and we still don't adjust or make a check!
4. Thus, Navy has 7 defenders in the immediate area and we only have 3 linemen and a fullback. In other words, 3 defenders would necessarily not be blocked.
5. Navy's noseguard points to the hole the ball is going to go through before the play even begins. They know it's coming.
6. This is the icing on the cake: even if we weren't outnumbered, we still wouldn't have scored. If you watch all three linemen on the right side, they all get completely blown off the ball. The Navy linemen are across the line of scrimmage before our linemen (Olson, Duncan, and Carlson) are fully out of their stances. We lost the one-on-one battles easily.
7. This is a failure at all levels.
